Career Resources from Your Library

In a challenging job market, you may need assistance reworking your resume, refreshing your skill sets, or exploring career alternatives. HCPL has free online resources and print books to help you in your job search – all you need is a library card.


If you don’t yet have a library card, you can sign up for a digital card to access out databases and OverDrive collections. Find out more on our Get a Card page.

Despite the name, is not just for those in school. They offer a 24/7 drop off resume review, as well as live career coaches available 7 days a week from 10 am to midnight to assist with job searching, filling out online applications, interviewing, the Microsoft Office Suite, and resume/cover letter writing. Create an account to save your interactive sessions so you can revisit them later.

Learning Express contains a multitude of resources to help you develop skills useful for the workforce, including lessons on the Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator, as well as resume, interviewing, and basic skills such as math and writing. There are also practice tests for exams necessary in a variety of career fields, including the Postal Service Exam, Commercial Driver’s License Exam, and the ASVAB.

Universal Class goes a bit deeper with classes on professional topics such as Marketing, QuickBooks, Web Development, and Business Writing. They also include courses on basic computer skills, Microsoft Office, and using Google Tools. For some more creative pursuits, try your hand at Bartending and Mixology, Floral Arrangement, and Cake Decorating. This is just a small selection of the courses they offer!

Other Resources

Virginia Career Works often provides programs at our libraries on resume writing and interviewing. Currently, they have a great selection of resources available on their website including information on job searching, career planning, and unemployment.

GCFLearnFree is an excellent learning resource from the Goodwill Community Foundation. They provide on demand tutorials on a variety of subjects including basic technology skills, social media, workplace skills, and personal finance.

DigitalLearn also offers online video courses in basic computer and technology skills. This is a great place to start if you are new to using a computer, or just want a refresher!
