Teen Volunteer Opportunities at the Library

There are many reasons for teens to volunteer. Volunteering builds community, fosters social relationships, and fulfills volunteer hours required by many middle and high schools. Read on to learn more about engaging volunteer opportunities for teens at the library.  

CROCHET FOR A CAUSE (Open to grades 6-12) at Fairfield Area Library

Teens in grades 6-12 will learn how to crochet—or build and expand upon existing skills—and earn volunteer hours while making projects for local organizations.

During the information session, teens and their parents/guardians will complete the required county volunteer paperwork and learn about program expectations. Then, teens will start their crocheting journey! Throughout the sessions below, we will learn crochet terminology and techniques and work on our projects.  Registration is required for any session you plan to attend. If you are age 12–14, your parent or guardian must be in the library building while you're participating.

TEEN COMMUNITY SERVICE (Open to grades 6-12)

Drop in to earn community service hours through a variety of projects benefiting local organizations. Please bring any forms that need to be signed for your service credit. If you are age 12–14, your parent or guardian must be in the library building while you're participating.

• Monday, November 16, 4:30-5:30PM at Twin Hickory
• Saturday, November 21, 3-5PM at Glen Allen
• Monday, November 30, 6-7PM at Gayton
• Saturday, December 5, 3-4PM at Fairfield
• Monday, December 16, 4:30-5:30 PM at Twin Hickory

VOLUNTEEN PROGRAM (Open to teens ages 14-18)

• The VolunTeen program is a great way to earn community service hours and gain valuable experience for future job opportunities. VolunTeen duties vary from library to library, but may include helping with library programs, book and materials maintenance, office work, shelving, and sorting materials in the Circulation department. VolunTeens are expected to be able to work independently, rather than in a group setting, and follow a weekly work schedule.

• The application process and demand for VolunTeens varies among libraries. All VolunTeens are required to attend a mandatory orientation meeting. Check with your local library for more details.

• Interested? Download and complete a VolunTeen application and return it to your preferred library location.

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD (TAB) (Open to teens ages 12 and older)

• The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is a way for you to have a voice at the library, participate in programs with other teens, and help others in your community. TAB programs include promoting library services, helping librarians to develop teen programs and strong teen collections, supporting annual charity drives, and developing youth-led service projects.

• TAB groups meet once a month in all parts of Henrico County. Contact your library to ask about joining or download and complete a TAB application and return it to your preferred library location.
• If you are age 12–14, your parent or guardian must be in the library building while you're participating.
