Upcoming May Programs

Spring is here and we are so excited to see you at our upcoming May programs! Learn how to get snacks from your garden, join us for fun role-playing games and trivia, and relax with us in our ongoing meditation program. Plus, we are happy to announce several in-person book discussion groups and storytimes starting in May. Read on to see what we have coming up at the library.

Book Discussions
Glen Allen, Libbie Mill, and Tuckahoe libraries are offering in-person Book Discussion groups. They will be discussing:

Outdoor Family Storytime

Bring a blanket and join us for a socially distanced outdoor storytime filled with books, songs, and activities to help your child grow a love of reading and acquire the skills they need to start school ready to learn.
This storytime will be presented outside, weather permitting. In the event of adverse weather, we will move indoors and library building safety precautions, including mask wearing, will be practiced and registration will be required in order to maintain social distancing. To secure a “rain event/indoor” spot, please register all attendees (including parents/caregivers).

Star Wars Trivia
Monday, May 3, 6 pm
Prepare for Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you!) as we see who has what it takes to be the Jedi Master of Star Wars trivia! All ages, groups and individuals are invited to join us online.

For Kids

Young Gardeners
Seed to Sprout – Tuesday, May 4, 3:30 pm
Spring flowers are blooming! Now is the time to plant seeds and learn how plants grow. We’ll share some books, talk about the plant life cycle, and learn how to sprout our own seeds at home.
Sprout to Snack – Saturday, May 15, 11 am
Growing food in the garden is tons of fun! Our librarians can’t wait to show you the tasty herbs and vegetables they have been growing. We’ll explore together, enjoy a picture book, and demonstrate an easy snack fresh from the garden.

Family Music Fun
Friday, May 28, 3:30 pm
For ages 3-5. Let's make music and celebrate spring with stories and fun. Feel free to bring your own shaker, although this is not required.
And tune in to Family Storytime on Facebook every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 10:30 am and Pajama Storytime every Tuesday at 6:30 pm!

For Teens

Comic Makers Club
Monday, May 3, 7:30pm
For Tweens and Teens. Every first Monday of the month is Comic Makers Club! Bring paper and pencils or pens to our virtual meetup for young artists and authors who love comics. We will make comic strips, share projects we're working on, and talk about the comics we enjoy. All artistic skill levels and styles are welcome.

Teen Role-playing Game: Roll for Shoes
Saturday, May 8, 2:30 pm
Roll for Shoes is a lighthearted role-playing game that encourages innovation and teamwork while acting out fun scenarios. No prior gaming experience required - all you need is a regular set of dice.

Anime Club
Wednesday, May 5, 7 pm

Saturday, May 22, 2 pm
Teens are invited to meet up online for a spirited discussion of all things anime and manga. Follow us on Instagram @hcpl_teenscene to find out what we will be discussing each week.

For Adults

Breath & Movement Meditation with Meena Dasgupta
Saturdays, May 1, 15, and 29, 9:30 am
Allow Meena to guide you through 40 minutes of Diaphragmatic breathing technique followed by full body relaxation exercise (Yoga Nidra) to aid you in harmonizing the mind and body.

Unless otherwise noted, programs will be held via Webex.
