Richmond Environmental Film Festival

A line of movie posters styled to appear like a film strip. The outer posters are cropped so their content is obscured, but the two in the center The Human Element and Blood on the Mountain are highlighted.

The Richmond Environmental Film Festival (RVA EFF) showcases films that raise awareness of environmental issues relevant to the Richmond region, our nation, and our planet. This year, HCPL has partnered with the RVA EFF to present two virtual film screenings and discussions. Read on for details!

The Human Element
Tuesday, February 26, 6:30 pm
In an arresting new documentary, environmental photographer James Balog captures the lives of everyday Americans on the front lines of climate change. With rare compassion and heart, The Human Element inspires us to reevaluate our relationship with the natural world. (2018, NR, 76 mins.)

This screening will be followed by an update on the Hampton Roads area by Lauren Landis of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network.

Blood On The Mountain
Thursday, February 25, 6:30 pm
This film focuses on the environmental and economic injustice in West Virginia and its rippling effect on all American workers. It tells the story of a hard-working people whose rights have been curtailed by corporate control, which prevents communities from benefiting fairly from the rich natural resources of their land. The failure to diversify the economy has ensured its unrestricted control by outside corporations with help from the politicians in their pockets. (NR, 2016, 93 mins.)

The screening will be followed by a discussion and Q&A session with two people featured in the film: Maria Gunnoe (Community Organizer and Executive Director of Mother Jones Community Foundation) and Chuck Nelson (retired coal miner, member of UMWA Local 1440 in Matewan, WV, and community organizer).
