Learn a New Language at the Library
Learning a new language can feel daunting and intimidating at first, but the benefits are immense and rewarding. Learning a new language can help increase your career opportunities, broaden your travel experiences, and introduce you to a world of new literature and other cultures. According to research, learning a new language can help stimulate your brain, improve your memory, boost your self-esteem, and improve your first language. Henrico County Public Library can support you on your journey to learning a new language. Read on to learn more about some of our resources!
HCPL offers opportunities for language learners to practice speaking with others in an informal environment.
- ESL Conversation Cafe is intended for English language learners who want to practice conversational English. This program is offered at several locations:
- Tuckahoe Library—1st and 3rd Mondays of the month at 7PM
- Fairfield Library – 2nd Monday of the month at 7PM
- Twin Hickory Library—2nd Wednesday of the month at 7PM
- Libbie Mill Library—4th Wednesday of the month at 7PM
- Additionally, Jueves En Español, translated as “Thursdays in Spanish,” is offered at Twin Hickory Library for those who are interested in practicing their conversational Spanish.
And if you can’t attend a program, our collection houses a variety of materials, including titles translated into Spanish and language learning databases that can be accessed for free with your library card:
- Rosetta Stone - Rosetta Stone offers interactive language courses for 30 different languages, including English as a second language (ESL — aprenda inglés).
- Transparent Language - Learn 110+ languages, including English. Spanish speakers can access lesson plans for 29 languages. Other resources include ESL/ELL materials and test prep materials for the U.S. citizenship exam.
- Universal Class - In addition to 500 on-demand courses in a wide range of subjects (many of which offer accreditation to earn Continuing Education Units), Universal Class includes learning modules for English language learners.
- Tutor.com - Tutor.com provides students - including English language learners - homework, essay, resume, and job seeking support, as well as opportunities to connect with live tutors.
