Older Adults Month: Discover Wellness Events and Resources at the Library

According to the United States Census Bureau, close to 18% of older adults who live in Henrico County are 65+, and statistics show that those demographics will only continue to grow in the future (Census.gov). This Older Americans Month, we’re highlighting library resources that support health, wellness, and aging in our community. Read on to learn more about upcoming related programs, including our newest, Disc Golf 101 for Older Adults, as well as titles from our collection and available county resources.

Are you an older adult living in the Henrico area interested in trying a new sport that benefits your mind, body, and spirit? If you’re looking for an activity that’s affordable and easy to start, disc golf is a great choice for seniors in Virginia. That’s why we’re excited to introduce Disc Golf 101 for Older Adults on Saturday, May 23, from 10AM-11:15AM at Tuckahoe Library. The program will be presented by local disc golfer Tim Eck, owner of the Good Sports Disc Golf store. Tim has been active in organizing tournaments and leagues throughout the Richmond region, including Tour de Richmond, which is widely recognized as the region’s premier disc golf tournament series. He will cover the history and fundamentals of disc golf, including an overview of what the sport is, its origins, and how it has grown over the years.

If you're familiar with traditional golf, you'll find it easy to understand the rules of disc golf. Instead of hitting a golf ball, you throw a special disc—different from a frisbee (disc golf discs are more aerodynamic). The scoring system is similar: a par 3 means you aim to get the disc into the basket in three throws or fewer.

Additionally, disc golf allows you to be in nature and enjoy the natural beauty of the world around you, which can help relieve stress and anxiety. Staying reasonably active as you get older can significantly contribute to a longer, healthier life. The Mayo Clinic outlines four main components of fitness training: cardiovascular (aerobic) exercise, strength training, stretching, and core stability. Activities like walking can help with weight management and overall health, while stretching enhances flexibility. Disc golf includes all of these elements, making it an enjoyable way to stay active (Professional Disc Golf Association).

Whether you’re looking to stay active, meet new people, or simply try something new, Disc Golf 101 for Older Adults is a great place to start. Join us on May 23, 2026, to discover a fun, low-impact activity that supports a healthy lifestyle while connecting you with your local community.
