Sleep Like Death by Kalynn Bayron
[Insert book cover image here]Sleep Like Death by Kalynn Bayron is a retelling of the fairy tale: snow white. Princess Eve has been raised to destroy the knight, who has terrorized the people of Queens bridge for years; he grants people wishes asking for payment or terms, but twists the wish into their worst nightmare. She is able to conjure weapons from nature, but it is not enough to defeat the knight. She uncovers secrets about knight, her parents, her past, and meets Nova; with his own journey with the knight.
This story is dark with at least two innocent people dying. It fits the story and adds to the main characters trauma. Eve is not the most interesting character. She feels bad about allowing people to get hurt, stubborn and doesn't allow others to tell her what to do, and is hungry for the knights death. She doesn't present any interesting ideas about her herself; Nova, the knights son, does however; he is guilty of helping his father make others lives miserable, doesn't ask for forgiveness as he knows what they do is bad; though we as the audience and the other characters can't help but forgive him. The writing style if fine though there's no humor; this book is on a more serious tone. One thing that I did not like was the naiveté of every character in terms of their wishes. Of course the knight can poke holes in your wish, you only have 1-2 sentences of instructions without being specific of what your words mean; which says a lot about how metaphors and the English language works.
My favorite part was how the wishes back fired; the people suffered for their mistakes and had to try to fix them. This was one of the most creative parts of the book though it could have been done better if the people made more specific wishes that don't leave room for interpretation, so when looking for holes, the knight is seen as intelligent instead of the people has stupid,
