Come enjoy the last days of summer with some fun learning opportunities at the library! You can watch a movie with us, create a craft, meditate, catch a concert, share stories, improve your financial literacy, celebrate our furry friends, and much more this coming month. Read on to see some highlights from our August program offerings.

Counterpont - The Band In Concert
Wednesday, August 4, 7 p.m. at Sandston
Enjoy a free concert by Counterpoint, RVA's soulful R&B, jazz, smooth jazz and variety band. All ages will enjoy these talented vocalists and musicians.

Tween Money Camp
For Tweens (Rising 5-8 grade students): Tuesday and Wednesday August 3-5, 2 p.m.-3 p.m.
Join Virginia Credit Union (VACU) for a virtual camp all about money. Learn about savings, keeping a budget, jobs, and more. Registration is for all sessions. A laptop is recommended. Upon completion, come by the library to pick up a prize! Registration is required and participants will receive a link to join the virtual program upon registering.

Breath & Movement Mediation with Meena Dasgupta
Saturday, August 7, 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
Allow Meena to guide you through 40 minutes of Diaphragmatic breathing technique followed by full body relaxation exercise (Yoga Nidra) to aid you in harmonizing the mind and body. This program will be held online via Webex. Visit the event listing for full details and how to join.

Technicolor Tuesdays
Tuesday, Augut 10, 2 p.m.-5 p.m. at Libbie Mill
Come watch The 7th Voyage of Sinbad with us! In this film, the Arabian Nights hero battles horrifying monsters on a quest to acquire a magical egg that is needed to return a shrunken princess to normal size. Directed by Nathan Juran and featuring the stop motion wizardry of Ray Harryhausen. (1958, G, 87 Mins.)

Creature Feature
Tuesday, August 10, 2:30-3:30 p.m. at Fairfield
Help out a local animal shelter by making new signage for adoptable pets! Supplies will be provided; just bring your creativity and love of furry friends. Registration is required for all attendees. Face coverings are required for all participants age five and older who are not fully vaccinated.

Summer Reading Craft Finale 
Thursday, August 12, 2 p.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, August 21, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at North Park
All ages welcome as we craft art based on Tails & Tales. Drop in to the North Park Library and create on-site or take with you and craft at home. Come any time between 2-5 pm, no registration required. Face coverings are required for all participants age five and older who are not fully vaccinated.

Mermaid Crafts for Adults
Friday, August 13, 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at Tuckahoe
Dive into our mermaid-themed craft program! We'll provide all the instructions and supplies you'll need to take home a few crafts sure to make a splash at your house. While supplies last.

Hamilton: The Artistry and the History
Saturday, August 14, 2 p.m.-3:30 p.m. at Varina
Two librarians (one with a degree in history) will present the story of how the Broadway show "Hamilton" came to be while also illustrating the true story of Alexander Hamilton's life. Comparisons, contrasts and inspirations for the show will be illustrated with photo, video, music, and stories throughout the presentation. To finish, there will be a Kahoot trivia contest about the show and its historical inspiration.

Deconstruction Lab
Saturday, August 21, 2 p.m.-4 p.m. at Gayton
This is your chance to see the insides of some cool electronic devices and household items. Tools will be provided to let you can take apart a host of items so you can see how they were assembled. Don't worry about putting them back together as the purpose of this program is just to see what's inside. Registration is required for all attendees. Face coverings are required for all participants age five and older who are not fully vaccinated.

Digitize Your Photos and Home Movies
Monday, August 23, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at Fairfield
Monday, August 23, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at Twin Hickory
Learn how to preserve old photos, slides, 35mm film, and VHS tapes by digitizing them in the Library's Digital Media Lab. We'll provide a demonstration on how to use the scanner, VHS player, and accompanying software so that you are ready to visit the Digital Media Lab and start digitizing on your own!
Registration is required for all attendees. Face coverings are required for all participants who are not fully vaccinated.

Animal Tracks and Trails
Tuesday, August 24, 10:30 a.m.-11:15 a.m. at Varina
Put on your detective hats and get ready to inspect the clues animals leave for us in order to solve the mystery of who, what, where, when, and why! We will explore different kinds of animal feet with all sorts of fun activities and learn to recognize the stories they leave behind.
Registration is required for all attendees (including parents/caregivers). Face coverings are required for all participants age five and older who are not fully vaccinated.

All About Dogs with Flash the K9 Superhero
Thursday, August 26, 3 p.m.-3:45 p.m. at Glen Allen
Best fit for ages 4 up. Celebrate National Dog Day with a tail wagging program all about man's best friend. Bring your stuffed dog and we'll share some dog-gone great stories, followed by making a dog-inspired piece of art. You will also meet Flash, a friendly dog with an important job, and his K9 explosives handler. Registration is required for all attendees (including parents/caregivers). Face coverings are required for all attendees age five and older that are not fully vaccinated.
