September 9-16 is James River Week, and the library is marking the occasion with programs to educate and celebrate one of our greatest community resources, the James River! Whether you enjoy hiking and biking its trails, spotting dozens of its native bird, fish, and plant species, swimming in its waters, or kayaking, canoeing, or rafting down its class II-IV rapids, join us as we learn more about Richmond’s beloved James River and how we can help protect its future.
PROGRAMS
Stormwater Management in Honor of James River Week
- Thursday, September 7, 6:30 – 9PM at Twin Hickory
- Lindy Durham from Henricopolis Soil and Water Conservation District will help us honor and respect our beloved James River. Discover the effects of stormwater on Henrico streams and ultimately the James River, and then learn some simple things we can do to lessen our impact.
- Tuesday, September 12, 6:30 – 7:15PM, North Park, All Ages
- Join Megan Brown from Keep Henrico Beautiful and learn about the importance and the fun of the James River, why it attracts humans and animals year round, and what we can do to protect it - starting in our own backyards. After all, we are all connected through our shared watershed. Enter our drawing to win one of two river-related prizes, courtesy of the Friends of the Library.
- Thursday, September 14, 4 – 4:30PM, Glen Allen, Elementary (K-5)
- Celebrate James River Week with a storytime and craft all about rivers. Megan Brown with Keep Henrico Beautiful will share stories and provide information to families.
Conservation Photographer: Lori A. Cash
- Saturday, September 16, 11AM – 12PM, Tuckahoe
- In this James River Week featured event, award-winning Conservation Photographer Lori A. Cash shares examples of her work, tips and techniques from the field, and resources for practicing photography in ways that respect the James River ecosystem. Cash is a co-founder of the Responsible Photography Collective and a member of the communications team for Wild Virginia. Her wildlife and nature images have been published in a variety of media including magazine publications such as North American Nature Photographers Expressions, Virginia Wildlife, American Butterflies, WildBird, Nature Photographer, and Wildlife in North Carolina. This program is presented in partnership with Keep Henrico Beautiful.
