Virtual Museum Tour: Black History Month Highlights with the Valentine

Post-Modern African American Art

Amanda Dalla Villa Adams leads this discussion of late 20th- through 21st-century African American art from the Virginia Museum of Fine Art's permanent collection. Learn what it means to view art and how can we discover new things when properly looking at a work of art. Our discussion will begin with simply looking. Then we will explore influences, such as race, gender, or context, as well as technique and subject matter in the work of Kehinde Wiley, Julie Mehretu, Martin Puryear, Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker, Allison Saar, Renée Stout, and Robert Pruitt.
Amanda Dalla Villa Adams is an independent curator, art and culture writer, educator, and historian. She earned a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University; a Masters of Arts in Art History and Certificate in Museum Studies from the University of Cincinnati; and left VCU as all-but-dissertation in Art History.
