With work nearly finished at the new building site, Fairfield Library will be moving at the end of this month. The last day open at its current location will be Saturday, September 21, with the new building opening on Sunday, October 6.
Fairfield Library opened in 1976 with 16,000 square feet. Since then, the Fairfield community has grown, as has the library! We added computers, began teaching “Getting Started on the Web” classes, added DVDs and quite a few new books, and created a great community. You can stop by Fairfield Library to browse the stacks, go online, or consult with library staff for book recommendations, resources, and information.
The library has served its community well, but it is time for an upgrade! At the new library, you will be able to do all you can at the current one, and a lot more. Be sure to mark your calendars for the Grand Opening on October 6. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be at 2 pm, followed by the opening of the building. Check our new Fairfield Library page for more information.
The new Fairfield Area Library will be located at the corner of Laburnum Avenue and Watts Lane. It is nearly double the size of the existing library at 44,000 square feet, and was designed by Quinn Evans Architects of Richmond (formerly BCWH) and Tappé Architects of Boston with feedback from area residents. It is a beautiful modern building with meeting and study spaces, a Digital Media Lab, and lots of places to study, work, learn, and just hang out. It will also be open seven days a week, expanding library access for Henrico citizens on Sundays!
In addition, the new library will have a Creation Classroom, a one touch recording studio, a family collaboration zone, and an interactive Trailblazers wall featuring people who made notable contributions to the history and culture of the county, the state, and the nation.
While we are moving, we encourage you to use the nearby by North Park, Libbie Mill, Sandston, and Varina libraries. Books can still be returned to the outdoor book drop at Fairfield Library until Saturday, October 5.
