“Active Aging Week challenges society’s diminished expectations of aging by showing that, regardless of age or health conditions, adults over 50 can live as fully as possible in all areas of life—physical, social, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, vocational and environmental.” - International Council on Active Aging

There are many opportunities for older adults to enjoy life in Henrico County. In the library we offer lectures, craft programs, book discussions, and computer classes all year round. During Active Aging Week we have a variety of programs that provide information and resources for anyone who is looking to stay active and informed, regardless of age.

One of the best ways to stay active is to go out and help your community. On Saturday, September 22nd at Varina Library and Saturday, September 29th at Tuckahoe Library we will be hosting Volunteer Fairs. Many area non-profits will be on hand to tell you about available volunteering opportunities. Learn more here.

Other programs we have coming up during active aging week are:

Understanding and Responding to Dementia Related Behavior
Tuckahoe Library, September 24, 6:00pm
Fraud Prevention Program with Henrico County Police Department
Libbie Mill Library, September 25, 2:00pm
Navigating Medicare
North Park Library, September 27, 2:00pm
Fire and Fall Prevention for Older Adults
Glen Allen Library, September 29, 2:00pm

Also, on Friday, October 5th, the Greater Richmond Age Wave Coalition presents a course on Aging for Life at Varina Library at 10:00am.

Another great way to stay active in the community is the Friends of the Henrico County Public Library. Friends sponsor programs and help raise awareness of the library in the community.

The library isn’t the only place to find resources and events for older adults in Henrico County:

EngAGE in Henrico: Resources for Older Citizens - Henrico County has many resources for Henrico citizens 60 year old and older. This is the first place to look for information, assistance, and social activities!
Henrico Recreation and Parks: Senior Clubs & Leagues - Bowling, Mahjong, Tennis, and more! Recreation and Parks has a wide variety of sport and leisure activities for older adults.

There is always something to do in Henrico County, whatever your age! For the full list of programs and events happening around Active Aging Week and beyond, check out the Recreation and Parks & Public Library Program Guide available at all library locations and throughout the county.
